Origins and development
The city documents honorary citizens’ graves, benefactors’ and artists’ graves and memorials from several periods at the main cemetery. These include memorials to 1870/71, war graves from both world wars and remembrance sites for French prisoners of war. Fritz Koenig’s grave bears a sculpture he designed, continuing the site’s artistic history into recent times.
Origins: Established in 1805. The cemetery is in Landshut, between Niedermayerstraße, Marschallstraße and Schützenstraße, at Friedhofstraße 1, 84028 Landshut. Its area is approximately 7.2 hectares.
Design and present-day character
At 7.2 hectares, the main cemetery is Landshut’s oldest and largest cemetery. Its chapel, funeral hall, historic family graves and sculptor Fritz Koenig’s grave give the centrally located grounds a distinctive character.
Read this character description together with the development of Landshut Main Cemetery: it identifies what gives the grounds their present identity without turning the cemetery into a purely historical attraction. A visit can focus on spatial structure and named orientation points while leaving individual graves undisturbed.
